PRINCIPALS REPORT
Hello Swan Reach,
It is incredible to be experiencing such amazing weather at this time of winter. However, for many, rain is needed and a decent drop would go a long way to assisting mental and financial wellbeing. Even with such fine conditions, the SRAS community is experiencing another bout of illness and bugs. Flu-like symptoms or actual flu is about and oppressing too many. Physical health and mental health are highly connected, so hoping those affected have the supports needed and the speediest of recoveries.
SRAS warmly welcome Miss Kara Phillips, who is completing her 4th year of preservice teaching degree. She is with us for 4 weeks and taking on secondary English and Art. As we greet Miss Phillips, we also say farewell to Kaylee and her family, and wish them the very best at their new school.
The air conditioning upgrade in the gymnasium continues to be on-track for completion by the end of this week. SRAS is thankful to Benair for their ability to work around our needs and ensure the project is completed on time. Our community will be looking forward to and utilising its benefits for years to come.
Kind regards,
Mr John Robertson
Principal
MID-TERM ASSEMBLY
SRAS invites the community to join us at our SRC-led, mid-term assembly next Friday, 23rd August, starting at 2:30pm.
MID MURRAY OUR TOWN (MMOT) NEWS
The extended schooling community continues to benefit from our wonderful partnership with MMOT. Some upcoming initiatives from this partnership are:
- MMOT Youth Connector – whose role will be to facilitate events for youth from the Swan Reach, Blanchetown, Nildottie and Cambrai areas. These events will be held in the gymnasium and will be open to secondary students
- Discos – MMOT is collaborating with students to organise and conduct 2 discos later this term. One will be for primary students and one for secondary students. The discos will be open to students from neighbouring communities too
- Community garden – MMOT is granting $20,000 toward establishing a community garden in Swan Reach. The initial thinking is for this to be located on the Showgrounds land, opposite SRAS. A committee will be formed, including students, staff, MMOT personnel and interested community members to guide this exciting project from ideas, through to completion. More information about this will be available in future SRAS newsletters and on the MMOT Facebook page
PHONE POLICY PARENT SURVEY
Last year, the Department for Education made it compulsory for students in all year levels to keep mobile phones and personal devices ‘off and away’ during school hours, apart from some exempted reasons. Now that the Student use of mobile phones and personal devices policy (education.sa.gov.au) has been in all schools for a full year, the department is reviewing its policy and has invited our school community to provide feedback.
The survey is anonymous and will not identify you, your child, or the school. It should take around 5-10 minutes to complete.
If you would like to participate, thank you for completing the following parent survey by 5.00pm Friday 6 September 2024 (week 7): https://forms.office.com/r/zzwHrRs6L3
THE RESILIENCE PROJECT (TRP)
Attached is the latest Project Plus brochure from TRP Early Years, with handy information for parents and carers with the challenges and joys that early childhood brings. The tips come from parenting expert Lael Stone, who hosted the recent ‘Connected Parenting’ Webinar. It focusses on the topics; ‘A Child in Balance’, ‘Behind the Tantrums’, ‘Welcome to Emotions’, and finished with mindfulness activity the whole family can try at home.
Swan Reach Area School preschoolers have been learning about our wonderful local Emergency Services. Last term they were lucky enough to have visits from Mrs Holly Cowland from SA Ambulance Service, Mrs Trena Williamson from Country Fire Service and Mr Johnno Peacock from SA Police. All brought along their vehicles to show the children and gave them lots of information about their jobs and how to keep themselves and their families safe. The children learnt many things and had many, many questions and comments. To extend their learning, the preschoolers have enjoyed playing in their very own, 'Emergency Services' role play area, set up in the Early Learning Centre. The school thanks Holly, Trena and Johnno, and all our other volunteers. Swan Reach is lucky to have you.
This term has started off with, ‘Kindy Olympics’ being held over the last fortnight. The children had fun working through a list of Olympic events, trying their best and getting better with each attempt. They also enjoyed cheering each other on and encouraging others. They learnt about different countries, painted flags and each made a gold medal that were presented at our medal ceremony last Friday.

The R/1class is engaging with the unit, ‘When is Your Birthday?’. Students have started learning the names of the months in English and in Japanese. Students have noticed that there is a symbol 月 in every name of the months in Japanese. This symbol means ‘moon’. Students learnt how to write this symbol and made a moon mobile in the lessons.

We are pleased to update you on our recent pedal prix event, which was the 8-hour endurance race held on August 3rd at Tailem Bend.
In this race, we finished in a respectable place for our age group and are determined to achieve an improved result in our upcoming events. To better prepare ourselves, we have intensified our training, focusing particularly on endurance and teamwork activities.
The event had support from our families and friends, contributing greatly to the overall enjoyment and success of the day. It was also a valuable learning experience for our new riders, marking their debut and gaining crucial insights for future races.
We are very grateful to the school staff, including Mrs. Bonnie Harmer and her husband Martin, Mr. Carter, and Mr. and Mrs. Griffiths, for generously giving up their valuable weekend time, unpaid, to enable our participation in the Pedal Prix events. Additionally, we sincerely thank Mr. Neil Fawdry and Mr. Troy Haby for their assistance with the marshalling duties.
Our last race for the year is on the 21st -22nd of September at Murray Bridge, this race will be a challenge, as it is the 24-hour event.
Black Swan Racing Team
The Year 4-5 students have been hard at work in the Design Technology workshop, embracing a new project in designing, building, and eventually racing CO2 dragsters. This project is not only an exciting challenge but also a fantastic learning opportunity that blends creativity, engineering, and practical skills. The students are using a range of tools and equipment to craft their CO2 dragsters. From sawing and sanding to drilling and painting, the students are developing skills using the tools and also the importance of following rules and safe operating procedures in the workshop.

PERSONAL HEALTH & HYGIENE - Copy
Good health habits and personal hygiene are essential life skills. Children need to learn life skills that are necessary in order to become healthy, confident and responsible adults. In people with poor personal hygiene, the body provides an ideal environment for germs to grow, leaving it vulnerable to infection. On a social level, people may avoid a person with poor personal hygiene, which may result in isolation and loneliness.
- Showering or bathing every day.
- Washing hands with soap and water often.
- Washing hair regularly.
- Brushing hair every day and getting haircuts when needed.
- Brushing teeth twice a day.
- Changing underwear daily and wearing clean clothes.
- Using personal hygiene products such as deodorant.
